Story: The Blue Devils hadn't won a bowl game since 1960, and they came out of the locker room ready to change that statistic. But despite Duke taking an early 16-0 lead, Cincinnati clawed its way back into the game, holding a 17-16 lead at halftime. With just over a minute to play, and the score tied at 34-34, Duke sophomore Josh Snead fumbled on the Bearcats' 5-yard line, and the Blue Devils effectively lost a chance to wind the clock down further and take a shot at a potential game-winning field goal.
The next few plays were disastrous for Duke, as Cincinnati quarterback Brendon Kay hooked up with Travis Kelce for an 83-yard touchdown to give Cincinnati the lead, 41-34. Duke tried to respond, but quarterback Sean Renfree threw a pick-six after getting crushed.
