Duke basketball made a true statement with last night’s 118-84 win over Kentucky. The Blue Devils entered the season as national championship favorites and dominated headlines all off-season, but no one saw a win like that coming to open the season.
As expected, it was the freshmen that have drawn most of the attention. If the NBA Draft was held tomorrow, there is a very good chance that your top two picks would be Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett, in some order.
Barrett led all scorers with 33 points in just 32 minutes, while Williamson was super efficient, scoring 28 on just 13 shots in 23 minutes of playing time.
Barrett may be the more smooth operator, but Williamson has a physicality that absolutely jumps off the page. It has been apparently since his first dunk video went viral, and continues to astounds.
Former Duke basketball star Dahntay Jones thinks that Zion Williamson could go down as the greatest Blue Devil ever.
He spoke to TMZ Sports about the phenom’s debut on Tuesday night.
From the gossip site:
“I think he could be because of his natural ability. His ability is unique. It stands out.”
So, what does Zion need to do to deliver on this All-World potential? Work, work, work, work, work.
“He just has to have a tremendous work ethic. If he has that, with the energy he brings to the game, he’s definitely gonna be the best.”
In all likelihood, Williamson will only have one year to make that mark. It is a long list of Blue Devil greats to jump, as well, and most would probably argue that he has to capture a national title to truly achieve it. Still, I’ve certainly never seen a Duke player—or any college player for that matter—quite like Zion.
