Florida State is in the middle of a coaching search, and the rumors are flying. Bob Stoops has been the subject of some of the juiciest speculation.
Yesterday, social media was ablaze with an unconfirmed report that Stoops was in Tallahassee. Late last night, WTXL ABC 27 reported the Seminoles were “nearing a deal” with the former Oklahoma head coach.
Well, Stoops has now weighed in on the reports, via Sooner Scoop’s Carey Murdock. He’s denying any interest in the FSU position and says he was not in Tallahassee at all on Monday.
Spoke w/ Bob Stoops this morning. He tells me the rumors/reports of him being a candidate for the Florida State job opening are not accurate. Says he was at the new Hard Rock Casino all day yesterday and at a Dan Marino Foundation party last night. Not interviewing for FSU job. https://t.co/Uwf7a4TCwQ

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has also spoken with Stoops, and he apparently told the College GameDay host the same thing he told Murdock.

Of course, this could be some posturing by Stoops, who is currently the head coach and general manager of the XFL’s Dallas Renegades. We’ve seen coaches in the past deny interest in a vacancy only to wind up being hired.
Perhaps though, Stoops is actually done with the college game. The XFL is expected to launch next year, so he’s presumably been focused on his new role.
If Bob is not a candidate, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep an eye on a member of the Stoops family and Florida State. Bob’s brother Mark is the current head coach of Kentucky and a former FSU defensive coordinator whose name has also been lobbied as a potential candidate.
