ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) rankings are out for 2016, and there’s an SEC program at the top. However, it may not be the one you expect.
LSU tops the list with an FPI of 26.8, followed closely by Florida State at 26.6. Oklahoma is third, with Clemson and Tennessee rounding out the top five.
Where is Alabama? The Tide checks in at No. 6, with an FPI of 22.9. We have a feeling ‘Bama fans will disagree with that ranking.
Here’s a look at the top 20. For the full list of every FBS team, click here.
Some other things of note:
- Kansas is by far the lowest ranked Power 5 program. The Jayhawks are 107th with an FPI of -10.4.
- The FPI is low on Ohio State. The Buckeyes check in at 17, behind arch-rival Michigan.
- Five non-Power 5 programs crack the top 50: Notre Dame, Boise State, BYU, USF and Houston.
- North Texas brings up the rear with a -19.4 FPI.
It’ll be interesting to see if ESPN’s original rankings prove to be accurate or not.
