On Wednesday, news broke that Heisman Trophy-winning Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston received a citation for stealing crab legs from a local Publix Super Market. Today, former NFL player and current ESPN host Marcellus Wiley asserted that this Publix has been "taking care of players for years", a claim that was backed up by Sun-Sentinel writer Omar Kelly. Portland Trail Blazer and former Lehigh basketball star C.J. McCollum has also weighed in, saying that this was common practice in many schools.
While it seems strange that the store would now turn on Winston and Florida State, we've received a tip via e-mail containing a Facebook post from March that claims that Winston has taken free food from a grocery store before.
If this post from almost two months ago is to be believed, either Winston has been allowed to take large quantities of food in the past, or he's been pulling a fast one on some cashiers. Either way, there seems to be more to this story than mere "youthful ignorance."
We've reached out to those involved and do not yet have a response.
