Rick Pitino has reportedly been "effectively fired" as Louisville head coach after an FBI investigation into college basketball corruption roped in the Cardinals program.
Pitino is out after 16 years with the program, just weeks before the team is set to begin practice for the 2017-18 season.
He captured the 2013 national title, and coached numerous top players for the Cards. One of them, point guard Chris Jones, has already taken to Twitter to support his former coach.
Jones played for Louisville from 2013-15.
Jones transferred to Louisville after two seasons at Northwest Florida State. His two U of L teams reached the Sweet 16 and then the Elite Eight. Jones averaged 13.7 points, four rebounds, and 3.7 assists as a senior in 2014-15.
Pitino was 416–141 at Louisville during his career.
