The Louisville Cardinals basketball program got off to a fast start last night, with a win over ACC rival Miami, 86-74. The ACC expanded its schedule this year, and has a set of conference games to start the season.
Jordan Nwora, who should contend for ACC Player of the Year this season, got off to a hot start, scoring 23 points to lead all players. The talented wing hit 8-of-16 shots, including 4-of-6 threes, and added 12 rebounds.
Louisville’s big first game shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, even if it was overshadowed by the nation’s top four teams facing off at Madison Square Garden last night. The Cardinals have been a trendy national title pick entering the season.
Put Jay Williams in the category of folks who like the Cards this year. This morning, even after watching his Duke Blue Devils score a big win over Kansas, he predicted that Louisville will be the best team in the nation on ESPN’s Get Up.
"I think Louisville will be the best team in the country."

From Jay Williams:
“I think Louisville will be the best team in the country. Kentucky and Louisville, this battle that we all know that they have, will be one of the most epic battles we’ve seen in college basketball this year.
“Now, Tyrese Maxey, one of the best players in the country, Kahlil Whitney is actually projected above him in the draft, but Jordan Nwora is the name in college basketball. He will be a stud for Chris Mack and Louisville this year.
“I just think Chris Mack has this team loaded, they’re ready to go. Kentucky will be No. 1 in the projected polls this week after they beat Michigan State, but I’m just telling you, Louisville has the experience, and they have the talent to win the whole thing.”
Louisville enters the year at No. 5 in the country, so they definitely aren’t off the radar, but with much of the oxygen being sucked up by the likes of Duke and Kentucky, as usual, it is nice to get some shine for other teams as we dive into the college hoops season.
Nwora and the Cards are back in action against Youngstown State on Sunday.
