Former Louisville star Donovan Mitchell isn't shying away from his alma mater in the wake of its NCAA punishment.

Yesterday, Louisville's appeal was denied, meaning the Cardinals have to pay a fine and forfeit all their wins over a four-year span from 2011 to 2015. Included in that span is the program's national championship in 2013.

Mitchell wasn't at Louisville in 2013. He played for the Cards during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.

Still, he had a message for Louisville fans after the news became official yesterday.

“You can take away the banner but you can’t take away the long hours in the gym the incredible wins the passion that this team played with!” Mitchell tweeted. “They were an inspiration to young athletes including myself!! Go ahead take away the banner but we all know who won in 2013 #L1C4.”

Mitchell also tweeted that he'll be wearing customized Louisville adidas sneakers in his next NBA game.

Those sneakers are pretty clean. They don't match with Mitchell's team's colors but that may not matter.

Mitchell is averaging 19.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as a rookie for the Utah Jazz. He's been a revelation so far.

If Louisville fans didn't love him already, they certainly will after the last two days.
