Freshman safety and nephew of Edgerrin James, Jeff James Jr. will no longer be a part of Miami football program.
According to the Miami Herald, freshman Jeff James Jr. is no longer a part of the Miami football program.
James, an Orlando native, is the nephew of former Miami star running back Edgerrin James.
“I talked to Jeff and we both felt it was in his best interests to get a fresh start somewhere else,’’ coach Mark Richt said in a written statement per the Miami Herald. “We wish him all the best in his future plans.’’
James, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound safety, played in one game as a true freshman during the 2016 season. If James decides to transfer, he will be required to sit out the 2017 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He'll be eligible to play immediately if he transfers to a JUCO or non-FBS school.
James was a 3-star recruit coming to of high school, and was the No. 112 ranked safety in the nation from the 2016 recruiting class, per 247 Sports.
