This is a tremendously classy story about former Miami head coach Al Golden. According to the Miami Herald's Susan Miller Degnan, Golden visited defensive back Artie Burns' dying mother in the hospital last night, one day after being fired by the university.
Dana Smith, the mother of University of Miami star cornerback Artie Burns, is at a local hospital in grave condition, according to someone close to the team.
UM's football staff was informed that Smith had a heart attack, though that has not been officially confirmed.
Miami coaches, including former head coach Al Golden, had gathered at the hospital Monday night.
Burns' mother passed away sometime late last night or early this morning. It is an unbelievably tragic situation, but an amazing gesture on Golden's part to be there for his former player.
Our thoughts are with Burns and his family. There are certainly more important matters than football.
