The start of his college football career has been a whirlwind for Tate Martell. The former blue-chip recruit went from heir apparent to Dwayne Haskins' job at Ohio State, to quickly transferring to Miami, and now, might be facing a position change.
Martell was a four-star recruit when he committed to Ohio State. He got some work last year behind Haskins, but by the time Haskins was wrapping up his one season at starter, and clearly NFL-bound, rumors had already popped up of Georgia's Justin Fields transferring to the Buckeyes.
Martell initially said he welcomed the competition, but quickly changed his mind, heading to Miami. When he was cleared to play right away, it seemed like his job to lose, but instead The U is going with Jarren Williams under center tonight against Florida.
While he is still listed at quarterback on Miami's roster, it looks like a position change might be in his future. After the quarterback battle was settled, it looked like he might make another school change, as he was absent from practice. Instead, he remains a Hurricane, and has been doing work with the wide receivers.
That continued during pregame warm-ups today.
Whether Tate Martell will actually see time split out wide is yet to be seen, as is whatever happens if Miami has to go away from Williams at quarterback. The team also has N'Kosi Perry, who had a very rocky freshman season but has some experience.
We're just minutes away from the start of this intrastate rivalry, and the FBS season as a whole, kicking off. The Hurricanes and Gators are set to get things going at 7 p.m. ET. The game is being broadcast on ESPN.
