Mack Brown scored a major recruiting win in his return to North Carolina today as he was able to flip four-star Florida State quarterback recruit Sam Howell.

Howell hails from Monroe (N.C.) Sun Valley High School. He had been committed to the Seminoles since April, but had been pursued heavily by UNC since then.

Howell visited his in-state program unofficially in September and officially in November. He appeared to be trending toward UNC for some time now, and made it official today.

While UNC wooed Howell while Larry Fedora was still the coach, this is a crucial win for Mack Brown. Being able to flip an in-state kid from FSU is a great start to his first recruiting class in his second stint in Chapel Hill. UNC assistant Tim Brewster celebrated the commitment on Twitter soon after it was announced.

Howell is the No. 3 Pro-Style quarterback in the 2019 class and the 87th-rated prospect overall, according to 247Sports' Composite Rankings.
