Some Of Dean Smith's First Recruits Will Have Lunch Together At North Carolina To Honor Late Coach

A legendary lunch will be taking place at North Carolina tomorrow.

Back in March, shortly following Dean Smith's passing, a photo surfaced of a letter the late coach had sent to each of his former players via his will. The letter included a $200 check, which Smith wanted his players to use for a "dinner out."

Five of those checks will be getting used tomorrow. Joe Brown, Bill Bunting, Franklin “Rusty” Clark, Dick Grubar and Gerald Tuttle - the North Carolina basketball class of 1969 - will be meeting up for a meal thanks to their former head coach.

The fivesome and their wives will meet in the UNC Alumni Center tomorrow afternoon.

“That’s what coach Smith wanted when he sent out the checks to the players,” Brown said, via the Greensboro News & Record. “The letter said ‘have a dinner out.’ For me, anyway, part of that was, ‘Hey, you guys get together.’ ”
