With the reports today that Kyrie Irving and Harrison Barnes will join Team USA for this summer’s Olympics in Brazil, it appears that USA Basketball’s 12 man roster is set for the event. Irving, the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup MVP, joins Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, and a number of other American stars.
The LIKELY official @usabasketball team for Rio: Kyrie, Klay, Butler, Lowry & DeRozan, KD, Melo, PG13, Draymond, H. Barnes, Boogie & DeAndre
— Kevin Connors (@kevconnorsespn) June 25, 2016
As currently constituted, here is a position by position breakdown of the team.
Guards: Jimmy Butler, DeMar DeRozan, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Lowry, Klay Thompson
Forwards: Carmelo Anthony, Harrison Barnes, Kevin Durant, Paul George, Draymond Green
Centers: DeMarcus Cousins, DeAndre Jordan
Even without top players like LeBron James and Stephen Curry in the fold, the U.S. will likely be the monumental favorite to take home the gold medal once again.
