When Derrick Coleman left Syracuse for the NBA in 1990, he made a promise to his mother: one day, I’ll get my degree.
The 47-year-old former No. 1 overall pick came through on that promise this weekend. His mother didn’t know he had, though. Coleman had been taking online classes in secret, hiding the fact that he was close to graduating from his family.
So, this afternoon, at a Mother’s Day lunch, Coleman, who received his degree from Syracuse this weekend, gave it to his mother as a gift. She thought he was just giving her a family portrait. Her reaction is awesome.

It doesn’t get much better than that.
