Charlotte was the site of college basketball history tonight. UMBC became the first No. 16 seed to beat a No. 1, stunning Virginia 74-54.
This was an upset that no one saw coming. It had literally never happened before.
After the game, Virginia coach Tony Bennett spoke with CBS' Tracy Wolfson. He graciously credited his opponent, saying that his team "got our butts whipped."
Bennett said he told his team they had a historic season in ACC play, going 17-1 in conference play and winning the ACC Tournament. Now, they were on the wrong side of a historic upset.
"It stings, but I'm trying to tell the guys in there this is life," Bennett said. "It can't define you. You enjoyed the good times and you've got to be able to take the bad times."
You can see Bennett's full interview below.
Bennett is a classy coach. He will take his lumps as his team recorded yet another disappointing March finish, but he is approaching it the right way.
UMBC will move on to play Kansas State, which defeated Creighton earlier tonight.
