Oklahoma dominated the Big 12 Conference in the latter half of the 2010s. But with the team set to start yet another new QB in 2020 – and one with less experience than his three predecessors – there’s room for another QB to assert himself as the best in the Big 12. One analyst thinks that there will be a new No. 1 QB in the conference next season.
On Wednesday, Brad Crawford of 247Sports created a ranked list of the projected starting QBs in the 10 Big 12 schools. Taking the No. 1 spot was Texas QB Sam Ehlinger, who is heading into his senior year with the Longhorns.
Crawford explained that Ehlinger is expected to have “gaudy” numbers in his senior year under new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. His 80 touchdowns in the last 27 games are the second-most in college football.
“…Ehlinger’s best games of his career have come in spotlight opportunities against nationally-ranked competition, the mark of a true competitor… The Longhorns’ coaching staff expects Ehlinger’s senior numbers to be gaudy within new OC Mike Yurcich’s scheme…”
Ultimately, Crawford expects that Ehlinger and the Longhorns will be contenders for 10 or more wins and a spot in the College Football Playoff. Considering his level of experience compared to the other Big 12 QBs, it’s a strong bet to take.
In three seasons at Texas, Ehlinger has 8,870 passing yards, 68 touchdowns and a 63.2-percent completion rate. But he’s good on the ground too, boasting another 1,530 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns.
