There was plenty of exciting football and crazy upsets over the weekend. And with Week 3 in the books, Kirk Herbstreit reveals his top five performances and players as he does every week.
Sometimes, Herbstreit will recognize your typical powerhouse programs. This week, however, there are some uncommon teams included in his list.
Here’s the top-five ranking:
- Kansas Jayhawks
- UCF Knights
- Arizona State Sun Devils
- Temple Owls
- Kansas State Wildcats
Quite honestly, Kansas shocked everyone with 48-24 win over Boston College. The Jayhawk offense looked entirely different and in reality, dangerous. KU has been foreign to wins over Power 5 teams over the past few seasons. It’s a big step for the program.
UCF hosted the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday. Many expected a close bout, but this one was a blowout from the start. The Knights embarrassed Stanford in a 45-27 rout.
With some luck and a missed penalty, the Sun Devils pulled off a 10-7 upset over Michigan State. Temple slowed down an explosive Maryland offense and held on for a 20-17 win. And finally, Kansas State went into SEC territory and escaped with a 31-24 victory against Mississippi State.
Herbstreit also recognizes his top coaching performances:
- Kirk Ferentz, Iowa HC
- Chris Creighton, Eastern Michigan HC
- Gary Patterson, TCU HC
- Lyle Hemphill, Wake Forest DC
- Troy Calhoun, Air Force HC

Is there any team or coach Herbstreit should’ve recognized that he didn’t?
