Kansas fans had to be salivating heading into today’s third round game with Stanford. Atlantic-10 at-large team Dayton knocked off Syracuse for a Sweet 16 berth, and a tough New Mexico team had already fallen, giving Kansas 10 and 11 seeds ahead of them before a possible Elite Eight match-up with Florida.
And then they laid an egg.
The Cardinals’ balanced scoring and long 1-3-1 zone defense kept the Jayhawks in check. Kansas star Andrew Wiggins was held to four points on 1-for-6 shooting. Without the efforts of Tarik Black (18 points) and Conner Frankamp (12 points), this one would have been ugly. Frankamp hit two late threes to keep Kansas in the game, but Stanford outlasted the cold Kansas team for a 60-57 win and a meeting with Dayton in Memphis next week.
With under a minute left, CBS panned the crowd and caught a young Kansas fan, who seems to sum up the entire game for KU.
Meanwhile, Stanford is enjoying its victory:
