2023 five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson is arguably the top QB prospect in the country who isn’t a Manning. But unlike Arch Manning, he’s ready to make his college commitment now.
In a press conference on Sunday, Nelson announced that he is committing to the Oklahoma Sooners. The Los Alamitos quarterback becomes the first five-star player to join Oklahoma’s 2023 recruiting class.
247Sports rates Nelson as the No. 5 overall prospect in the Class of 2023. He is the No. 2 quarterback in the country and the No. 1 prospect from the state of California.
As a varsity freshman in 2019, Nelson contributed over 1,000 yards of offense but really broke out in 2020. This past year he threw for a touchdown on 20-percent of his passes.
Nelson is now the highest-rated recruit in the Class of 2023 to announce his commitment. But he may not be the highest-rated player to join the Sooners when all is said and done.

The 2023 recruiting class has the potential to be one of the best Oklahoma has had under Lincoln Riley. They currently have Malachi Nelson and four-star athlete Treyaun Webb. But they lead in the race for several other five-star recruits.
247Sports gives the Sooners top odds of landing No. 1 overall prospect Lebbeus Overton (DL), No. 8 Brandon InnIss (WR), No. 16 Jalen Hale (WR), and No. 22 DeAndre Moore Jr (WR).
Given that they now have their prized quarterback of the class, this could be a historic class for the Sooners.
How good will Malachi Nelson be with the Oklahoma Sooners?
