One day after his comments in a GQ interview about Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones caused a firestorm, Baker Mayfield says he has spoken with Jones privately.

Mayfield said yesterday that he felt his words were taken out of context, which made them seem like he was ripping Jones.

He told reporters today he maintained that explanation when reaching out to Jones personally.

“It had nothing to do specifically about Daniel,” Mayfield said, via PFT. “I reached out to Daniel because all of that blew way out of hand and I wanted him to know how I felt. I’ve heard nothing but great things from Saquon and Sterling Shepard, guys who have nothing but respect for him, and I respect their opinions. I just wanted to clear the air with him.”

For what it's worth, Jones and his head coach Pat Shurmur didn't seem too affected by Mayfield's quotes yesterday when they first became aware of them.

“I think he’s a great player,” Jones said in reference to Mayfield. “He can throw it and I enjoy watching him play.”
