Kyler Murray Hasn't Played In First NCAA Baseball Tournament Game

Kyler Murray injury update: the Sooners' two-sport star continues to miss time with a hamstring issue. Murray has emerged as one of Oklahoma's best baseball players. He is also the expected starter at quarterback next fall.

His baseball emergence has been of keen interest to Oklahoma fans, even those who don't follow the Sooners' baseball team. After a tough first year on the diamond, Murray is now one of OU's best players. There is a real chance that he winds up being a first round pick in next week's MLB Draft.

Right now, his focus is on Oklahoma's NCAA chances. The Sooners are currently playing in their first game in the Tallahassee region.

During the Big 12 Tournament, the star outfielder went down with a nagging hamstring injury. He remains day-to-day.

So far, today is not the day in which he'll return to the field. And that's okay right now.

Despite Kyler Murray and fellow star Steele Walker being out with injuries, the Sooners bats are alive in Tallahassee.

Oklahoma entered the top of the seventh inning down 10-7 against Mississippi State. That inning, the Sooners sent 15 players to the plate, exploding for nine runs to take a 16-10 lead. Right now, they hold that lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.

During an interview, Oklahoma coach Skip Johnson said that Murray might be able to pinch hit. However, that doesn't seem to be necessary today with the big late lead.

Hopefully for the Sooners, Murray and Steele can make it back soon. Oklahoma also faces No. 7 Florida State, which is hosting the region, as well as Samford.

Earlier this week, baseball analytics site FanGraphs put out a glowing new evaluation of Murray as a baseball prospect. The site ranks him No. 21 overall in the 2018 draft, with excellent athleticism and strong performance.

However, head football coach Lincoln Riley isn't panicking yet about losing his quarterback. A high draft pick could bring the potential of a big signing bonus, but Riley has repeatedly said that he expects to have Murray this fall. Today, CBS Sports' Barrett Sallee reported that Murray "intends" to remain with the football team, no matter where he's selected.

The MLB Draft will be held from June 4-6. We'll know more about Murray's options very soon.
