Former Oklahoma star running back Samaje Perine received some tough NFL news on Saturday afternoon.

According to a report from ESPN NFL reporter John Keim, the Washington Redskins decided to part ways with for former collegiate star.

Perine battled a crowded Redskins backfield for a few seasons, but couldn't make the roster heading into the 2019 season.

Here's the news from Keim.

It's a tough blow for the former Oklahoma star, but he's likely to pop up on another roster before the regular season kicks off.

Perine saw the field in just five games for the Redskins in 2018. He racked up just 32 yards while backing up Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson.

He made a few starts late in the 2017 season, and wound up with 603 yards and a touchdown on the ground, and another 182 yards and one score through the air.

Perine suffered an ankle injury in the preseason before the 2018 season which prompted the team to sign Peterson. With former LSU star Derrius Guice healthy, the Redskins decided now was the right time to move on from from Perine.

Over 1,000 NFL players will be cut heading into the regular season as teams cut their rosters down to 53.
