Texas Guard Says Oklahoma's Buddy Hield, Not Michigan State's Denzel Valentine, Deserved AP POY

The AP announced this afternoon the recipient of their men's college basketball player of the year award.

The winner: Michigan State senior guard Denzel Valentine.

Many, including a player on his rival team, believed Oklahoma senior guard Buddy Hield is the player who should've gotten the award. Texas freshman guard Kerwin Roach, Jr. says the Sooners' star "well deserved" the AP POY trophy.

Valentine had a special year, but it's hard to argue with Roach here.

Both players had great seasons, statistically:

Valentine: 19.2 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game, 7.8 assists per game, 46 percent shooting, 44 percent from the 3-point line.

Hield: 25.4 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game, two assists per game, 50 percent shooting, 46 from the 3-point line.

The most-prestigious player of the year awards - the Naismith and the Wooden - have yet to be announced. Hield is believed to be the favorite to win those.
