Report: SMU "Intrigued" By Possibility Of Hiring Mack Brown As Head Football Coach
SMU football is a bit of a mess this season, especially after the surprise departure of June Jones on September 8. Jones had been the head coach of the Mustangs since 2008. When it comes to replacing the offensive guru, those at SMU have apparently been kicking the tires on one of the biggest names available in Texas football: former Longhorns coach Mack Brown.
FOX Sports' Bruce Feldman wrote about this possibility in his column on Sunday night.
COULD MACK COME BACK?
A wildcard name to keep an eye on with the SMU vacancy is former Texas coach Mack Brown, now an ESPN broadcaster. Word is, some well-connected SMU brass are intrigued by Brown and think he might be tempted by the chance to coach again.
Brown is 63 and it's not common to follow one 60-plus year-old with another, but as one source pointed out, the Mustangs basketball coach (Larry Brown) is also in his 70s (74).
Jones had SMU winning on a consistent basis before this season, and the ability to coach in Dallas might be attractive to Brown. It would also be a lower-pressure job than the one he had in Austin. This would certainly be an interesting development, if both sides have mutual interest here.
