After some drama over the last few days, Texas has landed a pair of top coordinators from Tulsa's Art Briles-style offensive coaching staff. This morning, reports emerged that after initially turning down the job, Sterlin Gilbert would take over as Texas offensive coordinator after receiving an assurance that Charlie Strong would be retained beyond next season. This afternoon, Texas made the official announcement.
Gilbert isn't coming alone, however. Joining him in Austin is his former co-coordinator at Tulsa and Bowling Green, and fellow offensive staffer at Eastern Illinois, Matt Mattox.
With Gilbert and Mattox in place, it appears that Texas is all set to convert this offense into something resembling the dynamic offense that Art Briles has built at Baylor. After the struggles of 2014 and 2015, we have to imagine Longhorns fans are welcome to the change, although it may take a while for the program to perfect.
