Texas Tech's new Sports Performance Center, which is directly next to Jones AT&T Stadium, caught fire this evening.
According to a report by KCBD in Lubbock, it is unclear if anyone was inside the facility, due to open on September 1, when the blaze began, but firefighters have rushed to the scene. Photos posted to Twitter show smoke billowing out of the building.
The Daily Toreadoreditor Michael Cantu streamed video from near the complex on Periscope.
More of the Sports Performance Center, from Lubbock Online:
The much-anticipated Sports Performance Center will house a new venue for Tech track &field teams and an 80-yard football field in which Kliff Kingsbury’s team can practice. Some of the other features are a multi-sport weight room, a sports nutrition bar and a hydropool plyometrics area.
Molina said the privately funded, $48 million project is on budget and on track — albeit a little later than originally planned — for a Sept. 1 substantial completion date.
We hope everyone in the area stays safe.
