Memphis Issues Official Statement, Basically Declares Itself Available To The Big 12

Tuesday, the Big 12 announced that it had asked the league's commissioner, Bob Bowlsby, to begin "surveying interest" from other schools in regards to joining the conference. Naturally, it's fair to assume that a number of universities are interested in jumping up a level to compete in a 'Power 5' league. One school is taking the guesswork out of it.

Memphis, currently a full member of the AAC, apparently wants in. Wednesday, the school's AD, Tom Bowen, released a statement. The school tweeted it out on Twitter as well.

In short, Bowen says the school is "prepared to take action when opportunities to increase the level of positive attention and exposure for our city, campus and Athletic Department are presented." In short, it means that if the Big 12 comes calling, it's bolting.

No, this doesn't come as a surprise. Memphis has long been rumored to be a potential expansion candidate. But it is interesting to see such a public declaration.
