Big East Approves Divisions: Meet The "Big East East" And The "Big East West"
It's official. The Big East has approved both an East and a West division within the conference. The divisions will contain six teams each and begin play after the departure of Pitt and Syracuse for the 2013 season.
The Big East is hoping that these divisions will lower the amount each team has to travel and also encourage regional rivalries. Each season, teams will play eight conference opponents and five of those eight will be divisional games.
Even though the alignment will have to be reassessed when Navy joins in 2014, for now, the divisions will be split up as follows:
East Division
UCF
Cincinnati
Connecticut
Louisville
Rutgers
USF
West Division
Boise State
Houston
Memphis
San Diego State
SMU
Temple
Despite speculation that the divisions would have names such as "Blue" and "Red", the Big East stuck to the old-standby, leaving some fans disappointed. However, it can't get any worse than being called the Legends and Leaders.
