The University of Connecticut will hold a press conference at Gampel Pavilion at 2 p.m. ET, where 70-year-old Head Coach Jim Calhoun will announce his retirement after 26 years at the helm of UConn's men's basketball team.
NBC Connecticut's Kevin Nathan sent local and national media into a frenzy last night when he reported that sources told him Calhoun's retirement was imminent. A couple of hours later, ESPN's Andy Katz was able to confirm that the Hall of Fame coach would indeed be retiring and that Assistant Coach Kevin Ollie is to take his place.
Storrs has become overrun by local and national media today as the man who led UConn to three national titles in 18 trips to the NCAA Tournament is ready to step down, ending an era that will be hard to replicate.
College Spun will be on the floor in Gampel Pavilion this afternoon covering the press conference live. Updates will come in real time as we track this historic day in UConn basketball.
UPDATE: Junior forward Niels Giffey tells College Spun that Calhoun will meet with the players before today's press conference.
"He's going to talk to us right before the press conference," Giffey said. "I don't want to talk about it right now. I just want to listen to him telling us what he thinks and talk about it later."
