Memphis, Uncasville To Host AAC Basketball Tournaments

Good selections?

The American Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday that FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. will be the location of the conference's first men's basketball championship in 2014.

According to the conference's announcement, the tournament will be begin with two first round games on Wednesday, March 12, and will conclude with the championship game on Saturday, March 15.

Reports throughout the selection process suggested that Hartford, Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Louisville were considered for the tournament.

“We are very excited to have the first American Athletic Conference championship at FedExForum,” AAC commissioner Mike Aresco said. “We received significant interest from many outstanding venues. FedExForum is an outstanding facility and the Forum, the city of Memphis, the University of Memphis and the local community will combine to create a wonderful inaugural event that our teams, coaches, administrators and fans will embrace and enjoy.”

FedExForum is home to the University of Memphis men's basketball team and the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA. It will also be the site of the South Regional Finals in the NCAA Tournament in 2014.

The 2014 tournament will feature 10 teams: Louisville, UConn, Cincinnati, Rutgers, South Florida, Memphis, Temple, Central Florida, Southern Methodist and Houston. Seven of the 10 schools finished the 2012-13 season with at least 20 wins. Louisville, Memphis, Cincinnati and Temple reached the NCAA Tournament (UConn would have if not for an APR ban), and Louisville defeated Michigan to win the national championship.

Memphis joins Uncasville, Conn. as a host for the AAC basketball championships. The conference announced on Monday that Mohegan Sun Arena, located at Mohegan Sun Casino, will host the women's basketball tournament next season. XL Center in Hartford has hosted the Big East Tournament every year since 2004, but the conference feels like a new era of success is waiting in Uncasville.

“Mohegan Sun Arena offers our student-athletes, coaches and fans the best of many things –a world-class facility, a great destination and committed management," Aresco said. "We feel that being at Mohegan Sun will enhance an already very successful women’s tournament experience.”

The women's tournament will begin on March 7 and end on March 10.
