Today, college basketball fans found at that they are in for a treat on Super Bowl weekend. In an event dubbed "Super Saturday Hoops" on February 1st, the Michigan State Spartans will take on the Georgetown Hoyas at Madison Square Garden (The Super Bowl will be held at MetLife Stadium this season), the second of two matchups that day. The first matchup will feature Marquette and St. Johns, and both games will be picked up by Fox Sports 1, per a release from Michigan State.
Tom Izzo is very excited about the matchup:
"Playing Georgetown in Madison Square Garden on Super Bowl Saturday is a great addition to our schedule. I have a lot of respect for Coach Thompson and the way he has continued to build his program on a foundation of toughness first implemented by his father, a man for whom I have an incredible amount of admiration. As a huge football fan, I'm excited to be a part of Super Bowl weekend in some small way, while also playing a game in one of the greatest basketball venues."
While the Super Bowl is undoubtedly the main course that weekend, this will surely be a fantastic appetizer -- two iconic programs battling on the game's greatest floor. Count me in.
