Report: Patrick Ewing Will Meet With Georgetown About Head Coaching Vacancy On Monday

Patrick Ewing appears to be inching closer to being hired at his alma mater.

On Sunday morning, a report emerged from Fan Rag Sports declaring former Georgetown and New York Knicks star Patrick Ewing "a major candidate" for the head coaching vacancy at his alma mater.

Late Sunday night, The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowksi reported that things seem to be picking up steam. According to Woj, Ewing will meet with Georgetown officials on Monday.

If Ewing ends up getting the job, it will certainly be a splashy hire, given his NBA credentials and his place among the pantheons of Hoya greats.

However, given his lack of experience coaching at the college level, this could end up backfiring. Bringing back beloved alums who have never been collegiate head coaches usually isn't a great hiring strategy (see Sidney Lowe(NC State) and Eddie Jordan (Rutgers) among others). The jury remains out on Chris Mullin at St. John's as well.

In order for Ewing to succeed at G'Town, should he be hired, he will need to have a legit staff. Per Wojnarowski, he is already targeting potential assistants.

An NBA Hall of Famer, the 54-year-old Ewing has been an NBA assistant coach since 2002.
