Shaka Smart To Marquette? Rumors Fly Regarding VCU Head Coach

It's long been assumed that VCU head man Shaka Smart, one of the hottest names in the coaching profession after taking his team to the Final Four in 2011, was going to wait for the right opportunity to come his way before he left the Rams. Many are reporting that the now-vacant Marquette job just might be that opportunity. Others claim that it's not quite a done deal.

Rumors were flying on Monday that Smart could become the new head coach of the Golden Eagles, who saw their former coach, Buzz Williams, bolt for Virginia Tech late last week.

ESPN's Jeff Goodman, one of the most trusted names in the industry, says there is no deal and "nothing imminent" regarding Smart's potential hiring. Which is why, at this point, we'll classify this all as one big rumor.

Many have suggested that the potential job change would be a "lateral move" for Smart, considering the current state of the Big East. But remember that just a few years ago, it was reported that Marquette has the second-largest college basketball budgetin the nation. It's not as much of a head-scratcher as you'd think.
