Villanova is losing top assistant Ashley Howard to a head coaching position, and it is a local one.

Howard, who has been an assistant under Jay Wright for the last five seasons, will become the new head coach at La Salle, according to 247Sports' Evan Daniels.

An official announcement is expected Monday, per Daniels.

La Salle is one of the "Big 5" schools of Philadelphia college basketball, along with Villanova, St. Joseph's, Temple and Penn.

Howard is a Philadelphia native who has also been an assistant at La Salle and Drexel, his alma mater. He takes over at La Salle for longtime head coach Dr. John Giannini.

Giannini coached the Explorers for 14 seasons, compiling a 212-226 overall record. He led La Salle to the 2013 Sweet Sixteen.

While at Villanova, Howard helped recruit Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges. He helped the Wildcats win a pair of national titles in 2016 and 2018.

Howard was a standout player for Drexel in the early 2000s as well, so he has ample experience as a player and coach in the Philadelphia area.
