While many standout freshmen have been announcing their intentions of leaving early for the NBA Draft, Illinois’ Ayo Dosunmu did just the opposite tonight. He’s coming back to school.
Dosunmu made it official with a video announcement tonight on Twitter. His return is big news for an Illini program that made major strides in the latter part of the 2018-19 season.
Dosunmu, the top player in the state of Illinois and the 32nd-overall recruit in the 2018 class, led Illinois in scoring (13.8 points) and assists (3.3) per game as a freshman. He scored in double-figures in 23 of 32 games and scored 20 or more points on seven occasions.
“We are building. We will be better. I will be better, and that starts now,” said Dosunmu in his video.

Illinois finished 12-21 under Brad Underwood this past season after going 14-18 in Underwood’s inaugural campaign the year before.
However, the team did produce a four-game win streak in Big Ten play and won a conference tournament game, so there is some hope for the future.
The Illini have not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2013.
