Iowa redshirt freshman running back Henry Geil has entered the transfer portal and intends to leave the program, he announced today.

Geil, a native of Green Bay (Wisc.), was a three-star signee for the Hawkeyes in the class of 2018. He saw action in two games last season, rushing for 37 yards on 15 carries before redshirting.

According to Geil, he will remain in school through the end of the semester. Because he is in the transfer portal, he can have contact with other programs.

"I would like to thank the University of Iowa and their staff for the opportunities the Hawkeyes have brought me," Geil wrote on Twitter. "I've decided to enter the transfer portal, and will be transferring at the end of the semester."

Iowa still is well-stocked at the running back position this season, with juniors Mekhi Sargent, Toren Young and Ivory Kelly-Martin available.

Iowa will open its 2019 season against Miami (Ohio) on Saturday night at Kinnick Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
