Iowa Student-Athlete Creates Petition For Seniors to Regain Year of Eligibility

The NCAA made a tough decision on Thursday afternoon, canceling all winter and spring championships due to the coronavirus outbreak. Almost everyone agreed it was the right decision, but many people are heartbroken for all the seniors that can’t finish the season on a positive note.

Iowa senior Allison Wahrman clearly doesn’t want her collegiate career to end on these terms. Wahrman, a member of the Hawkeyes’ track and field team, created a petition on for the NCAA to give seniors a year of eligibility back due to these unforeseen circumstances.

Wahrman understands the NCAA made the right decision and needs to put people’s health first. Nonetheless, she thinks it’s unfair for seniors to have their final year of eligibility taken away from them.

“Due to the Coronavirus, many NCAA student-athletes have been stripped of a year of eligibility before they were even able to compete. All of which, have been training for countless hours in order to achieve their personal and athletic goals. We understand why the NCAA are taking these precautions and believe that the issue is bigger than sports,” Wahrman said.

“However, having a year of eligibility taken away from these dedicated athletes simply is not right. If you are an NCAA student-athlete, or support NCAA athletics, we urge you to sign this petition in order to allow the NCAA to give back this year of eligibility to student-athletes.”

The petition already has 114,000 signatures and counting.

Notable college basketball stars have hinted at wanting another year of eligibility, such as Myles Powell from Seton Hall.

It’s unknown at this time if the NCAA will actually grant these student-athletes another year of eligibility.

Do you think seniors should receive another year of eligibility from the NCAA?
