We may have our first bit of real drama already today on National Signing Day, and it's not actually between schools so much as within a family. Five-star defensive lineman Malik McDowell from Southfield, Michigan has opted to sign with the Michigan State Spartans over Ohio State and Florida State:
So what's the drama over the commitment? Malik's mother, Joya Crowe, has not been in MSU's corner recently -- in fact, she told the Detroit Free Press on Monday that she isn't comfortable with him there:
“We don’t want him at MSU. Something happened, I don’t want to put it out there what it was, but I had a bad experience at MSU."
“I want him to get a good education. Not that he can’t get a good education at MSU. But he also wants to be a first-round pick after college. Nothing is guaranteed, but I don’t think their defensive line coach has the background for that.”
Crowe also told Detroit Sports Radio that she doesn't believe that her son is mature enough to make his own decision:
We're not sure if the family ultimately decided to agree to disagree and McDowell made his own choice, or if they came to an agreement together, but what's done is done -- that letter of intent is going to be signed, making McDowell a Spartan. It will just be interesting to see if all of the drama that comes with his commitment ends there as well.
