Brian Lewerke got his first start at quarterback for Michigan State in last Saturday's loss against Northwestern. It appears that he'll do the same today against Maryland.
According to Lansing State Journal columnist Graham Couch, Tyler O'Connor is likely out with a foot injury, and Damion Terry is out with a hand injury. With depleted depth, it is likely Lewerke's show against the Terps.
After a few tough losses earlier in the season, head coach Mark Dantonio defended O'Connor's play, despite many calls for the young Lewerke to take over under center. It is unclear whether O'Connor would be in there if he was healthy, but either way, fans who wanted the change will apparently get their way.
On the season, Lewerke, a freshman out of Phoenix, is 14-for-23 for 125 yards and a touchdown. Michigan State is 2-4, and riding a four game losing streak. Maryland opened the season 4-0, but has suffered back-to-back nasty losses to Penn State and Minnesota.
The game at Maryland Stadium is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast on Big Ten Network. We will update if Lewerke is confirmed as the starter before the game begins.
