The Spartans' quarterback depth just took a hit.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Messiah DeWeaver is transferring from Michigan State, he announced moments ago.

DeWeaver, a four-star recruit out of Dayton (OH) Wayne in the class of 2016, appeared in two games for the Spartans this season. He did not attempt a pass, and finished with four carries for -1 yard.

With sophomore Brian Lewerke grabbing a stranglehold on the Spartans' starting quarterback position, DeWeaver was looking at spending much of the next two seasons on the bench. Instead, he'll look to jump start his career elsewhere.

Michigan State will have redshirt freshman Rocky Lombardi and senior transfer Mickey Macius returning and backing up Lewerke in 2018. The Spartans will also add four-star freshman Theo Day and three-star freshmen La'Darius Jefferson and Javez Alexander.

Michigan State finished the 2017 season with a 10-3 record and a win over Washington State in the Holiday Bowl.
