Report: Tom Izzo Offered Same 5 Year, $35 Million Deal Stan Van Gundy Accepted With Detroit Pistons

Like it does nearly every offseason, the Tom Izzo-to-the-NBA talk started shortly after Michigan State bowed out of the NCAA Tournament in late March. Izzo was rumored to be a candidate for the coaching openings with the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves. The 59-year-old said in late April that he would be returning to East Lansing for the 2014-15 season, though.

According to a report by Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune, the Pistons, who recently hired Stan Van Gundy, offered Izzo the same deal, but he declined.

Van Gundy recently accepted a 5 year, $35 million deal to be Detroit's head coach and the president of basketball operations. Izzo, of course, has great experience as a coach, but there likely would have been a learning curve for him in a management role.

According to Vincent Ellis of the Detroit Free-Press, however, the report is untrue.
