Hiring Juwan Howard as head coach of the Wolverines was the easy part. Surrounding him with competent coaches who can make his transition from the NBA to college go smoothly might prove a bit harder. But Michigan appears to have a rising star in the NBA coaching ranks on their radar as one of the first members of Howard’s staff.
According to basketball insider Jeff Goodman, New York Knicks assistant coach Howard Eisley is “in the mix” to join the Michigan staff. Eisley has served on the Knicks staff since 2016.
Howard and Eisley both played in college at the same time, with Eisley leaving Boston College one year after Howard left Michigan. Eisley had a journeyman NBA career, spending his 13-year career with more than half a dozen teams.
After retiring in 2006, Eisley became an assistant for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2010. In 2014, he was hired as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards.
If Howard is looking to bring on staffers with ties to the city of Detroit, he’s found as strong a candidate as any in Eisley, a Detroit native.
One name in the mix for Juwan Howard’s staff at Michigan is Howard Eisley, source told @Stadium. Hearing the former BC standout, long-time NBA player and NBA assistant could join Howard in Ann Arbor.

Juwan Howard was hired as the Michigan head coach earlier this week following the surprise departure of John Beilein for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Howard was a member of the legendary Fab Five of the early 1990s, and his hiring has already prompted members of the group to pledge to bury the hatchet for a reunion.
