Jim Harbaugh was seen as the guy to get Michigan over the hump, and back into the win column against Ohio State, when he took over at his alma mater a few years ago. The Wolverines have undoubtedly improved on the Brady Hoke and Rich Rodriguez years, but a big gap remains between them and the Buckeyes.

With today's 56-27 Buckeyes win in Ann Arbor, Jim Harbaugh has etched his name in the rivalry's record books for the wrong reasons. Between the two teams, never before has a head coach lost his first five meetings in the rivalry.

Harbaugh's come close with the infamous overtime game in 2016, but the scores have mostly been ugly for the Wolverines. Starting in 2015, his teams have lost 42-13, 30-27, 31-20, 62-39, and today, 56-27.

The team improved during the year, and Harbaugh managed big wins over rivals Notre Dame and Michigan State, but a 29-point loss in the one game that really matters is a bitter pill to swallow.

We've speculated that Harbaugh may want to pack things up and look for other opportunities. If anything, people have forgotten just how good he was in the NFL, leading the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl berth during his brief tenure there. He'd immediately be at the top of most teams' lists if they were to open. Some Michigan fans would definitely welcome a new staff, but it would also beg the question: if not Harbaugh, who turned Stanford into a national power, who can turn things around at Michigan? We probably won't get that answer in the immediate future, and firing Jim Harbaugh would probably be a bridge too far at this point. Ryan Day's program isn't slowing down any time soon, though. Something has to give in Ann Arbor. [

Jim Harbaugh is the first head coach in the history of the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry to lose his first 5 games in the series.
