One of the major issues of Jim Harbaugh‘s tenure at Michigan has been the quarterback position. It it way too early to tell if freshman J.J. McCarthy is the answer, but the very early returns are quite good.
McCarthy was a massive recruiting win for the Wolverines. He was ranked No. 25 overall in the 2021 class, and No. 5 among quarterbacks, coming from prestigious IMG Academy.
The Wolverines blew out MAC squad Western Michigan today, 47-14. Cade McNamara, the Wolverines’ junior signal caller, got the start and was very effective. He completed 9-of-11 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns.
It was a bomb by McCarthy that has really turned heads though. In the fourth quarter, the Wolverines found themselves in a 3rd-and-25 situation, a pretty unwinnable situation. McCarthy was flushed out to the right by a pass rusher, avoided a sack and set his feet, delivering a perfect strike to Daylen Baldwin over the top of the defense. He ran away from the Broncos defensive backs for a 69-yard touchdown to cap things off.
Just an ABSURD throw from Michigan's JJ McCarthy. Wow.

J.J. McCarthy finished 4-for-6 for 80 yards and that score. McNamara also impressed, of course, but McCarthy’s outing looks like a potential sign of things to come for the program.
Obviously a win over a MAC program doesn’t necessarily mean that Michigan has righted all of the issues that have plagued them for the past few years, especially during last year’s 2-4 campaign, but they’ll certainly take this as a jumping off point.
The difficulty will ramp up in a big way next Saturday though. Michigan hosts No. 20 Washington, one of the favorites in the Pac-12.
