Michigan Basketball: What Do The Wolverines Need To Do To Make The NCAA Tournament?

Despite a 20-11 record, the Michigan Wolverines are in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row. Four losses in five games to end the regular season moved the Maize and Blue from a near-lock to the outside looking in.

In Big Ten play, Michigan finished 10-8, but that was only good enough for eighth in the league. Out of conference, the Wolverines have only one quality win, over Texas. Blowout losses against Xavier, UConn and SMU aren't good for the resume either.

Unless the Wolverines make noise in the Big Ten Tournament, they will be headed for the NIT, according to the major bracket analysts.

Likely Seed: Michigan is likely going to miss the Big Dance, even if it beats No. 9 seed Northwestern in the conference tournament on Thursday. However…

Ceiling: …if John Beilein's bunch can go out and beat top-seeded Indiana in the Big Ten quarterfinals, they'll make things very interesting. Of course, if they win in the semifinals and reach the conference title game, they will have all but locked up a bid.

Right now, Michigan fans can't feel too confident in their team's chances. But this is March, and crazier things have happened. They need to take care of business, starting with Northwestern on Thursday at noon on BTN.
