Michigan vs. Appalachian State – Game Time, TV Schedule, Line, Preview, Predictions

Here we go again.

The opening weekend of the 2007 college football season featured one of the biggest upsets in the sports' history, as the No. 5 Michigan Wolverines lost to an FCS team -- defending national champion Appalachian State -- in Ann Arbor, 34-32.

Now, seven years later, the Wolverines will want to avoid embarrassment again, and while these teams aren't national title contenders in the FBS or, in the Mountaineers case, the FCS, this is still one of the most compelling games in the opening week of college football.

Location: Michigan Stadium (Ann Arbor, MI)

Betting Line: Michigan -34.5 via 5Dimes

Prediction: In a way, an Appalachian State win this year would be just as surprising as the famous 2007 game. The Mountaineers are coming off of a 4-8 campaign in 2013, the first year under head coach Scott Satterfield, and aren't expected to be good right away, as this is the first year that the team is joining the FBS.

While Michigan isn't viewed as a national powerhouse this year, the Wolverines may come into the 2014 season a touch underrated. The team isn't ranked, but it has two solid options at quarterback in Devin Gardner and Shane Morris, has talent all over the field, and brings in a loaded recruiting class, led by potential superstar Jabrill Peppers. If Brady Hoke's staff can coach up all of the talent on this team, Michigan may be a team that can contend for a Big Ten title.

Expecting Michigan to cover a -34.5 line is a bit much, so you probably shouldn't expect that. However, you should expect that the Wolverines' will avenge the 2007 loss to the Mountaineers. If they don't, Hoke's hot seat will become hotter than the face of the sun, and it could be a long season in Ann Arbor.
