Update: It's official - Morris will get the start over Gardner at quarterback today. The school's Twitter account released the news a few minutes ago. We'll see how he fares - Wolverines fans are hoping he can provide a spark.
Earlier: Is there going to be a change at quarterback in Ann Arbor? While there's no official word, all signs point to sophomore Shane Morris starting under center for the Wolverines against Minnesota instead of Devin Gardner. Before today's game, Morris led the Wolverines out onto the field.
While this isn't necessarily a guarantee that Morris will get the nod, there is another clue: Morris took first team reps during warm ups, while Gardner warmed up with the second team.
The Wolverines' offense has struggled this year, as it is averaging 24 points and 193.3 passing yards per game. Both of those statistics rank 12th out of 14 teams in the Big Ten. The Wolverines' offense has been especially ugly against schools from Power 5 conferences, as it scored 10 total points against Notre Dame and Utah.
Gardner has started every game under center this season, and has gone 59-for-92 with 694 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. Morris has appeared in three games, and has also struggled, going 7-for-20 with 79 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.
We'll see if Morris does indeed get the start when the game against the Golden Gophers kicks off at 3:30 P.M. on the Big Ten Network.
