Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that unlike college basketball fans, college basketball coaches and players don’t get to watch teams from all conferences play on a consistent basis. Example? Michigan coach John Beilein, whose Wolverines are set to face Kentucky Sunday with a Final Four berth on the line, had no clue that John Calipari starts five freshmen until he started scouting them this past week.
John Beilein said he had no idea Kentucky started five freshmen until today.

UK first started five freshmen – Julius Randle, Aaron Harrison, Andrew Harrison, James Young and Marcus Lee – back in mid-November against Robert Morris. But it wasn’t until early February that another freshman, Dakari Johnson, permanently replaced sophomore Willie Cauley-Stein in the lineup. And in fact, given Cauley-Stein’s ankle injury, it’ll be Johnson getting the majority of the minutes at the center position in their matchup.
Will Kentucky continue its magical run? The Wildcats are just three victories away from something Michigan’s famed ‘Fab Five’ never pulled off – an NCAA title.
