Report: Quarterback Philip Nelson To Leave Minnesota

Unexpected.

Sophomore quarterback Philip Nelson finished the 2013 season as Minnesota's leading passer and third leading rusher, accounting for 1,670 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Gophers this season. Today, Nelson told local radio personality Dan Barreiro that he was leaving the program:

Nelson had been in a two-QB system with freshman Mitch Leidner, but he was the primary option in the majority of the Gophers' games this season. Minnesota fans seem surprised by the announcement:

Some tweets indicate that Nelson will look for a more passing-oriented offense. Minnesota threw the ball on less than 32% of its plays from scrimmage this season:
